Abk. von "Hyper Text Markup Language". Auf SGML basierende Sprache zur Erstellung von Webseiten. Über sog. "Tags" werden die Struktur, die Inhalte und die Links einer Seite definiert. Browser interpretieren den HTML-Text und zeigen die Webseite entsprechend an. Die vollständige HTML-Spezifikation kann auf der Website des World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) eingesehen werden. Für eine erfolgreiche Suchmaschinenoptimierung sind HTML-Kenntnisse unabdingbar.
